Cavallotto is a producer which holds a very special place in our hearts. Our first ever visit to Cavallotto around 5 years is the reason that I’m as obsessed with wine as I am today. Spending time with Giuseppe Cavallotto touring the estate and tasting the entire lineup of their wines was like nothing we’d ever experienced. Then, there was 2013 Barolo Bricco Boschis… This was my ah-ha moment, and the wine that swept me off my feet. At the time, I hadn’t smelled or tasted anything like it, and it totally blew me away. Prior to this I had some level of interest in wine for a year or so, but this wine turned that casual level of interest into passion which pushed me to learn and explore more. This is the wine that started it all for me. Fast-forward to this past Friday, when the Eric Guido out a bottle of 1971 Cavallotto Bricco Boschis and placed it on the table. My heart skipped a beat. I don’t think I’d ever been so excited to taste anything. I went into this wine with unrealistic, ridiculously high expectations, and to say that it exceeded them is a total understatement. It was not what I expected at all, in the absolute best way possible. I had no idea that wine could ever smell or taste anything like that. It was something totally out of this world. Sasha called it “alien”, a word which I’d only heard her describe one other wine with, and I couldn’t agree more. I believe Eric called it “magic”. I didn’t take notes that day, and I don’t regret that. This was a wine I really just wanted to enjoy and meditate over. Just as 2013 Barolo Bricco Boschis evoked dozens of emotions and delivered a sensory explosion which I’d never before encountered, roughly 5 years later, after tasting hundreds or maybe thousands of wines since then, 1971 Barolo Bricco Boschis has done that again, tenfold. I’ve never experienced anything like this wine, and I hope to do so again one day. Alien? Yes! Magic? Absolutely! And so much more, a wine I really have no words for. Eric, thank you so much for generously sharing this incredible bottle! What an amazing night with great friends.
