We don’t know much about this 1974 Nebbiolo, other than it’s one of the greatest expressions of Nebbiolo that we’ve ever tasted. The bottle wasn’t produced commercially, but rather for personal consumption. For that reason, we sadly have no idea who made this wine, other than whoever made it is a seriously talented winemaker.
Vibrant brick red with no brown at all, and no color separation whatsoever. Visually this looks somewhat similar to a new vintage Pelaverga. The picture we’ve included has no filter, and does a decent job capturing the color.
Upon opening the aromas of tar are front and center, and somewhat dominate the other elements which are struggling to shine through, but you can immediately sense the potential of what’s to come. The first sip is a bit volatile, but again, you could definitely see the direction that this wine is headed in, and it’s an outstanding one. We put the bottle aside for 5.5 hours, and didn’t decant it. During that time the wine transformed into something completely out of this world.
Enticing aromas of dusty rose, tar, licorice, new leather, wet road, cherry and apricot pits, summer rain, and a super faint hint of anise. Silky, velvety, and weightless, this wine dances across the palate and delivers a juicy explosion of ripe cherries, strawberries, pomegranates, stewed cherries, cranberries, and the faintest hint of tar alongside soaring, riesling-like, mouthwatering acidity, and just a touch of tannins which still remain and are beautifully integrated. This finishes very persistent, and keeps you coming back for more. This is easily one of the greatest wines we’ve ever tasted. It’s shocking to think that this wasn’t produced commercially, and that we’ll never know who made this wine.
