G.B. Burlotto Visit

Our History With G.B. Burlotto & Our June 2022 Visit

Year after year, G.B. Burlotto’s entire lineup of wines continues to leave us stunned. This was our third time visiting this legendary producer, and we couldn’t be happier to be back. They are without a doubt one of our favorite producers in the world.

G.B. Burlotto Sauvignon

Our Tasting Notes

2021 Langhe Sauvignon “Viridis”: Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in Verduno. G.B. Burlotto is one of the few Langhe producers to make a 100% Sauvignon Blanc wine, and it’s one of the finest expressions of the grape that we’ve tasted. The nose is fresh and floral, with aromas of white flowers and green herbs. The palate is crisp and precise with green herbs, sage, peppermint, and green apple with a pleasant minerality, and soaring acidity. Food friendly, and extremely refreshing, especially during Langhe’s hot summers. This wine is always one of our favorite white wines from Langhe.

G.B. Burlotto 2021 Pelaverga

2021 Verduno Pelaverga: Made from 100% Pelaverga grapes grown in Verduno. This is one of our favorite wines that G.B. Burlotto produces, and is one of our favorite grapes grown anywhere in the world. Vintage after vintage, this wine is always absolutely magnificent. The 2021 vintage opens with an abundance of small red berries, particularly raspberries and wild strawberries, as well as pine. A very aromatic, elegant, and distinctive nose that couldn’t be confused with any other grape. The palate is filled with flavors of raspberries, black and white pepper, tart red fruits, and rosemary. Soaring acidity, and impeccable balance. Crisp and refreshing, this is always a wine which disappears from our glasses very quickly. Served at cellar temperature, this wine is very refreshing and enjoyable in the summer, but is also equally enjoyable during the fall and winter, when the wine’s aromatics beautifully compliment the food and aromas of those seasons. This is a wine that’s equally enjoyable on its own, meditazione, or with food, and pairs well with nearly anything. In fact, we’ve yet to find a single dish that this wine hasn’t paired well with, though our favorite pairings are with the local cuisine of Langhe, and sushi, both are stunning combinations.

G.B. Burlotto Barolo

2018 Barolo Acclivi: Produced only in exceptional vintages, Acclivi, is made from a selection of the best and oldest grapes from different vineyards sites all located in Verduno (Monvigliero, Neirane, Rocche dell’Olmo and Boscatto), the final blend varies depending on the vintage. Pronounced aromas of juicy fresh red berries rise from the glass along with heaps of pine, followed by roses, some leather, and anise. The palate delivers flavors of tart red cherries, red fruit, and herbs. Silky smooth mouthfeel with ultra fine well integrated tannins, and vibrant acidity. This wine is structured, but still very approachable, and is very well balanced.

G.B. Burlotto

2018 Barolo Castelletto: The Castelletto vineyard, is located in Monforte d’Alba. G.B. Burlotto purchased 1.07 hectares in this vineyard in 2018, and this is their first time producing a Barolo from this vineyard site. Vines were planted in 1973, exposure is East and Southeast, and altitude ranges from 270 and 300 meters above sea level. Pronounced floral aromas led by roses, followed by juicy ripe red berries, licorice, wet forest floor, wet leaves, and some truffle. The palate is very fresh, and filled with flavors of red berries and baking spices. Silky smooth mouthfeel, with ultra fine, teeth coating, but well integrated tannins, with a very persistent finish. We’d been looking forward to trying this new addition to G.B. Burlotto’s Barolo lineup for a very long time, and it was well worth the wait. This is truly a gorgeous wine.

G.B. Burlotto Cellar

2018 Barolo Monvigliero: Grapes are grown in the famed Monvigliero vineyard, in Verduno. Monvigliero is located in the northernmost part of the Barolo growing zone, not far from the Tanaro river. Grapes are whole cluster fermented in open French oak vats, followed by a lengthy 2-month submerged cap maceration. Grapes are foot pressed to avoid damaging the stalks. The nose on Monvigliero is gorgeous and extremely distinctive, there’s no mistaking this for any other Barolo or any other wine in general for that matter. Pronounced heavenly aromas of candied red berries, candied sugar, baking spices, and sweet red fruit immediately leap out of the glass. Flavors of sweet cooked red fruits, white pepper, cinchona bark, and baking spices, with tart red fruit on the finish. Silky smooth, supple tannins, and vibrant acidity. Incredibly elegant. Extremely approachable in its youth, but will also without a doubt age beautifully for decades to come.
