Date of visit: May 30, 2023

After our early morning tasting at Cavallotto, and a delicious lunch at Osteria Veglio, we made our way over to Verduno to visit the legendary G.B. Burlotto. Not a bad day! These are two of our favorite producers not just of Barolo wine, but they’re two of our favorite producers anywhere in the world. Stylistically the two are quite different, but the wines they produce are equally beautiful, and it’s impossible for us to pick a favorite. To taste their lineup of new vintage wines just a few hours apart was extremely interesting, and something we’ve never done before. We began with the 2022 Langhe Sauvignon Viridis.
Our Tasting Notes

2022 Langhe Sauvignon “Viridis”: Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in Verduno. The nose is lively and energetic, filled with aromas of lemon pith, jasmine, and maybe a hint of chamomile. The palate opens with a burst of jasmine, followed by herbal and tart citrus notes, with soaring acidity. Precise, crisp, focused, and refreshing. A great way to begin the tasting.
2022 Verduno Pelaverga: There are not many wines out there that evoke the same level of excitement and enjoyment for us that G.B. Burlotto’s Pelaverga delivers vintage after vintage. Pelaverga in general, we think is a beautiful and very underrated grape, and Burlotto’s Pelaverga, is something truly extraordinary. When Cristina brought over the 2022 Pelaverga she let us know that not only was this wine just bottled, but this is the first bottle of 2022 Pelaverga that they’ve opened so far. We’re honored and extremely thankful that Cristina chose to share this bottle with us. Aromas of smoke, strawberries, pine, white pepper, and wild strawberries, all of which carry over to the palate, backed by soaring acidity, and a persistent finish. Bright, vibrant, energetic, clean, crisp, very direct, and is unbelievably delicious. This disappears in the glass far too quickly.

2021 Barbera d’Alba “Aves”: Burlotto’s flagship Barbera bottling, made from a selection of grapes from their best and oldest vineyards, made in only exceptional vintages. Fruit forward, juicy, and inviting aromas and flavors of crushed raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, cranberries, and some pine, backed by lively acidity.
2019 Barolo Acclivi: Beautiful, elegant aromas of pine, crushed raspberries, cherries, strawberries, roses, some tar, and a hint of licorice, all of which carries over to the palate. The mouthfeel on this wine is incredibly silky smooth, shockingly so for a new vintage Barolo. Soaring acidity with very silky, beautifully integrated tannins, and juicy. It’s structured, but incredibly approachable. This goes down almost as easily as Pelaverga!

2019 Barolo Castelletto: This is the second vintage of Burlotto’s Barolo Castelletto, a wine which is made exclusively from Burlotto’s newly acquired Monforte d’Alba vineyard. Pine, rosemary, juicy raspberries and strawberries, and smoke are present on both the nose and palate, which is vibrant, energetic, and lively. Structured, with excellent balance, and a persistent finish.

2019 Barolo Monvigliero: The aromas on this wine are really like nothing else. Words simply don’t do it justice, you really need to experience it first hand. Aromas of cooked strawberries, fresh wild strawberries, raspberries, blood orange, forest air, candied sugar, candied red berries, bubble gum, and licorice, most of which carries over to the palate along with flavors of tart red cherries and a hint of new leather. It’s exotic, unique, captivating, and absolutely incredible. The palate is structured, yet approachable, with vibrant acidity and superfine tannins which appear to be intertwined, and compliment each other beautifully. It’s extremely lively, energetic, and unbelievably delicious. What a magnificent Barolo!
